January 2026: Every Melburnian knows that the best place to be during a summer heatwave is in the theatre – and luckily, there's plenty to see this month as the temperature rises. 'Anastasia' has finally opened at the Regent Theatre, and this family-friendly production makes for a captivating tale of romance and adventure. 'MJ the Musical' has been extended until March 1, which means you still have time to catch the dazzling spectacle before it moonwalks out of town. And back by popular demand is the MTC's 'My Brilliant Career' – with returning star Kala Gare shining bright as Miles Franklin’s headstrong hero, Sybylla Melvyn.

From the toe-tapping to the cathartic, consider this your ultimate guide to all the best Melbourne theatre shows happening this month.

Before you book...

Not all seats are created equal. Sure, there are some shows so spectacular and unmissable you’d happily sit anywhere, but most experiences in the theatre can be augmented by the best seats in the house. And occasionally ruined by the worst. So, without further ado, we give them to you.
